L A Civil Rights Leaders Demand Stop to Racist Grab of Black Homes.

Protest/Press Conference

Date: Wednesday, June 2, 2021

Time: 11:00am

Location: Wedgewood Inc., 2015 Manhattan Beach Blvd, Redondo Beach, CA

Los Angeles Civil Rights leaders will hold a press conference outside of Wedgewood Inc. The company seeks to foreclose on the Inglewood home of Marie Riggins, an elderly 82-year-old widow, and African-American homeowner. The foreclosure grab is part of a continuing pattern by white corporate real estate companies to oust distressed Black homeowners from their homes in Inglewood and South L.A.

“Corporate real estate firms continue to grab homes of distressed Black homeowners such as Mrs. Riggins in Inglewood and South L.A. at fire-sale prices,”

When Marie lost her husband to pancreatic cancer several years ago, she started having financial problems. She fell behind on the Carlton Square homeowner association fees. The HOA claims Marie owes $38,000. She disputes that amount.

Nonetheless, the Carlton HOA foreclosed on Marie’s property. Greg Geiser’s company then purchased the title and is looking to evict Marie.

Marie recently obtained an attorney who started a GoFundMe page. He has offered the company that purchased Marie’s house the $75,294 raised by the GoFundMe page but he says the company wants the full market value of the property. Greg Geiser has a history of evictions of Black and Brown residents. We are demanding a fair resolution from him to save Marie Riggins’ home.

Their predatory practice further shrinks an already shrunken and costly home market for African-Americans.” Our coalition of Civil Rights leaders is calling for Greg Geiser CEO of Wedgewood Inc to be a good corporate citizen and to negotiate a fair resolution with Mrs. Riggins Attorney Nissan Thomas so she can keep her home.
